The Infamous "Sundate"

Ah, the Sundate. The easiest way for a guy to get a date at BYU. A Sundate is exactly what it sounds like: a date on Sunday evening. Shantel had one last night.
But what exactly IS a Sundate? It can't really be a date, because that would be breaking the Sabbath. So it's not technically a date, but girls and boys pair off and do some fun/free activities. Basically, the guy just has to ask the girl at church if she'll come over to do something "spiritually uplifting", like decorating cookies. Last night, Shantel and her man made scones and then had deep discussions staring into each others' eyes while devouring them. Okay, it wasn't that intense. She just hung out with a guy friend and they ate and talked. (How boring, right?)
Even better than the apartment Sundate is the tunnel singing Sundate. Tunnel singing is a fabulous BYU cultural event. Every Sunday night at 10 p.m., year-round, BYU students gather in an underpass just south of the Marriot Center.

We sound just like the MoTab, but in a tunnel.

For an hour, the tunnel is filled with the harmonious voices of young adults singing the church hymns we all know and love. At 10:30, all those who just got mission calls announce where they're going. Right before 11, "Nearer, My God, to Thee" fills the tunnel in one more strain of praise, and then the closing prayer is offered. Tunnel Singing is an amazing opportunity to feel the Spirit (and grow closer to that "special someone"...?).
Sundates are definitely a "BYU thing". But they can be quite enjoyable chances to get to know people better while still feeling the Spirit. So the next time you're sitting home alone on a Sunday night (your roommates will probably all be out with their Sundates), call up a friend or that cute guy in your ward and invite them to go tunnel singing with you! It's a low-pressure (and free!) way to make some better friends.

If you are a really, really good Sundate, you might even get a high five at the end of the night.
